István Homolya (1940-2025)

Our former managing director István Homolya, musicologist, passed away on June 17, 2025, at the age of 85. His professional career was almost entirely linked to our company. After studying musicology at the Budapest Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music (1961-66), he supervised the editorial work of several of our publications from 1969 as an editor, later as deputy editor-in-chief. He was our managing director from 1986 until his retirement in 2004.

In 1994, he participated in the founding of the Hungarian Music Publishers’ Association and was also active as a music historian: with his books on Palestrina, Lassus and Bálint Bakfark, he played an important role in Hungarian musicology and promoting music history.

He led our company in difficult times, as the economic and political change in Hungary took place during his 18 years as managing director, and due to changes resulting from privatization, music publishing also had to meet numerous business challenges. Thanks to his wisdom, expertise and great leadership skills, Editio Musica Budapest had firmly and successfully maintained its position in the Hungarian and international music scene even in that new business environment of that time.

We will keep him in our memory.
